Meet KBI Biopharma Employee, Cheryl Broadway, Member of the Meherrin Indian Tribe of NC

Throughout the month of November, KBI Biopharma is celebrating Native American Heritage Month. For this week's, #TeamMemberTuesday, we sat down with Cheryl Broadway, proud member of the Meherrin Indian Tribe of North Carolina. Cheryl recently co-authored an article that shared a number of ways that people can participate in Native American Heritage Month – check it out here.

What is your role here at KBI and how long have you been with the company?

I hold the position of Senior Specialist of Global Training at our Patriot Park location and just celebrated three years with KBI.

What does your job entail?

I am responsible for leading the creation, delivery, maintenance, and continuous improvement of GMP-relevant training programs across multiple KBI sites. Some of my primary responsibilities include supporting the administration of training programs and the Learning Management System (LMS). I also design and create classes to address identified business needs and deliver classroom instruction in virtual or in-person formats. Some other responsibilities include collaborating cross-functionally to deliver training programs that meet organizational needs and ensure compliance with cGMP requirements.

And what is your favorite thing about working at KBI and your team?

My favorite thing about KBI is the CDMO aspect of the business. I enjoy being a part of a contract services organization that is committed to reducing process development time, decreasing production costs, and increasing the speed of development for biopharmaceuticals.

My favorite thing about my team is that each member is operating in their area as a subject matter expert. The team is versatile, professional, and collaborative.

Can you tell us more about your connection to Native American Heritage Month?

I am a Native American fashion and jewelry designer and instructor. I am a member of the Meherrin Indian Tribe of North Carolina and am currently the POWWOW Committee Chairperson and a member of the Enrolment Committee for the tribe. Partaking in Native American culture is a frequent part of my life.

How are you celebrating this month?

I am celebrating this month by being an informational vendor at the VA Hospital in Decatur, Georgia on 16 November 2023. I will be sharing traditional ceremony practices and the therapeutic benefits of smudging with sacred herbs, sage, and sweetgrass.  On 18 November, I will be participating in the Grand Entry of North Carolina Tribes at the 28th Annual American Indian Heritage Celebration in Raleigh, North Carolina which is hosted by the North Carolina Museum of History, North Carolina Commission of Indian Affairs, and the North Carolina American Indian Heritage Commission.

Why do you believe diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI&B) are important at work?

All are important because, the truth is, we are all different but come to work for a common goal. When we accept, celebrate, and promote the differences, we can settle into the things we have in common.

And lastly, What brings you joy?

I enjoy dressing up and decorating for special events. And I enjoy all things crafty. I also love being with family and friends and enjoying life!
